GTA 6 runs on Rockstar's RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) Confirmed, the same technology family behind GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, heavily updated for current-gen hardware. That much is official. The specific resolution, frame-rate and ray-tracing settings, however, are not confirmed Confirmed (no official modes). This page separates what we genuinely know about the engine and the trailers from the mode specifics that remain rumour.

What the trailers actually show
The official trailers give us real, confirmable visual cues, distinct from spec rumours:
- Dense, reactive crowds and traffic across Vice City and the Keys Confirmed (shown in trailers)
- Dynamic weather, including storms and shifting light, a Florida-evoking system Confirmed (shown in trailers)
- Detailed water, wet surfaces and reflections, especially in neon night scenes Confirmed (shown in trailers)
- Long draw distances across the Leonida countryside and coastline Confirmed (shown in trailers)
These are things you can see in Rockstar's own footage. What they do not tell us is the exact resolution or frame-rate that footage was captured at.
Expected display modes (rumour)
Most big PS5 open-world games ship with two display modes, and GTA 6 is widely expected to follow suit, though Rockstar has confirmed nothing:
| Mode | What it usually means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity / Quality | Higher resolution (up to 4K), richer effects, typically 30fps | Leak / rumour |
| Performance | Lower or dynamic resolution, smoother frame-rate (target 60fps) | Leak / rumour |
A 60fps performance mode on base PS5 is not confirmed, and some reports tie 60fps specifically to the PS5 Pro Leak / rumour. Treat any "GTA 6 runs at 4K 60fps" headline as speculation until Rockstar says so.
Ray tracing on PS5 vs PS5 Pro

Ray tracing, simulating how light actually bounces, would suit GTA 6's wet streets and neon beautifully. Where things stand:
- Base PS5 can do limited ray tracing, but it is costly, so games often reserve it for fidelity modes or specific effects like reflections Leak / rumour for GTA 6 specifically.
- PS5 Pro has stronger ray-tracing hardware and could push further, more reflections, better lighting Leak / rumour for GTA 6 specifically.
Rockstar has not confirmed any ray-tracing implementation for GTA 6 on either console. The PS5 Pro deep-dive covers what the Pro could realistically add.
Will GTA 6 look better than GTA V?
Yes, and this part is safe to say. GTA 6 is built for hardware several generations newer than GTA V's original platforms, on a modernised engine, with the visual leap clearly on show in the trailers. The leap over GTA V is comparable to the jump from GTA IV to GTA V, denser worlds, far better lighting and water, more lifelike crowds. The open question is purely how that fidelity is delivered (which resolution, which frame-rate, which mode), not whether it is a generational step up.
Bottom line on GTA 6 PS5 graphics
- Confirmed: RAGE Engine, dynamic weather, dense world, strong reflections, long draw distance.
- Rumour: specific fidelity/performance modes, 4K/60fps figures, ray-tracing details, base-PS5-vs-Pro differences.
