Rockstar has fixed the date: digital pre-orders of Grand Theft Auto VI can pre-load from 12 November 2026, one week before the 19 November launch. Boxed copies reach shops the same day and contain a download code, so they can pre-load as well. Both points come from the pre-order announcement Rockstar and Take-Two published on 24 June 2026 (Take-Two investor news). With under three weeks to go, here is how to get a PS5 ready so the download finishes before launch night, and what we know, and do not know, about the size.
What is confirmed, and what is not
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Pre-load start for digital pre-orders: 12 November 2026 | Confirmed by Rockstar / Take-Two |
| Boxed PS5 copies in stores 12 November, with a download code inside | Confirmed by Rockstar / Take-Two |
| Release: 19 November 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X | S |
| Exact unlock hour on 19 November | Not announced yet |
| Install size on PS5 | Not published by Rockstar or the PlayStation Store as of 25 October |
| Day-one patch | Not announced, but usual for big launches |
The missing size is the main practical problem. Community estimates mostly land between 150 and 200GB before any patch, and a viral "677GB" figure has no source. We treat the range as a planning estimate only. The real number should appear on the PlayStation Store listing once pre-load starts, and we will add it to our file size page the same day.
How much space to clear
Plan for at least 250GB free before 12 November. That covers the top of the estimate, a day-one patch and some headroom. How hard that is depends on your console:
- Original PS5 (825GB): about 667GB usable, so GTA 6 could take close to a third of it.
- PS5 Slim (1TB): roughly 840 to 850GB usable.
- PS5 Pro (2TB): about 1.89TB usable (Push Square), so most Pro owners only need a quick check.
To see what is taking space, open Settings, Storage, Console Storage, Games and Apps and sort by size. PS4 games can be moved to a USB drive instead of deleted. If you play several large games, an M.2 NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen4, with a heatsink) is the permanent fix; our file size guide covers what to buy.
Step by step: digital pre-order
- Check that the pre-order is on your account. In the PlayStation Store, open your Game Library or the GTA VI store page; it should show as pre-ordered. If you bought the PS Store version through the web, make sure it was on the same PSN account you use on the console.
- Switch on automatic downloads. Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Automatic Updates. Turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
- Keep Rest Mode online. Settings, System, Power Saving, Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Leave the PS5 in Rest Mode on the evening of 11 November. When pre-load opens, the console should start downloading on its own. If it does not, start it manually from the game's page in your library.
- Check the Downloads queue on 13 or 14 November. A finished pre-load shows the game as installed but locked until release.
Step by step: boxed copy
The boxed PS5 edition is different from a normal disc release: the box holds a download code, not the game on disc. That means:
- Buy or collect the box on or after 12 November (some shops deliver pre-orders that day; check with yours).
- Redeem the code in the PlayStation Store under Redeem Codes, or via the PlayStation website.
- The download then behaves exactly like a digital pre-order. Follow steps 2 to 5 above.
A PS5 Digital Edition can use the boxed copy too, since nothing has to be read from a disc. We explain the wider consequences, such as resale and lending, in a separate piece: the boxed PS5 edition is a download code.
What about launch night?
Rockstar has not said at what hour GTA 6 unlocks on 19 November. Some games unlock at midnight local time on PS5, others at one global time. We will update the release-date page as soon as the PlayStation Store or Rockstar states it. In the meantime, the countdown on our home page runs to 00:00 UTC on 19 November.
Our checklist for the next three weeks
- Pre-order placed (or a store you trust for the boxed copy): pre-order guide
- At least 250GB free before 12 November
- Auto-Download and Rest Mode internet switched on
- Edition chosen: Standard or Ultimate
- Tick the items off in the readiness checklist on the home page; it saves in your browser only
